The second version of the Austin-Healey Sprite utilized the same engine as the first one, which was the A-Series I4. However, it had bigger carburetors to provide more power. The design of the car body was totally modified with the distinctive "Frogeye" feature removed as the headlights were moved closer to the fenders. This decision to use a more conformist look resulted in a sports car that was 100 pounds heavier than the first version. From 1962 to 1964, BMC decided to use a bigger engine. Thus, the original 948 cc engine was replaced by a 1098 cc engine although it still belonged to the A-Series I4.
The third version of the Austin-Healey Sprite had the same 1098 cc engine as the second version but the main bearings of the crankshaft were made bigger and the block casting was designed to be stronger. The windscreen utilized curved glass for the first time and external door handles were introduced. Whereas the first two versions were open or had no roof, the third version was provided with a convertible roof. This model was produced from 1964 to 1966. The fourth version of the Austin-Healey Sprite that was produced from 1966 to 1971 had a bigger engine. It had an A-Series I4 1275cc engine. A key difference of this version from the third edition Sprite is that the convertible roof was no longer removable. It had a folding design that facilitated its use. The Sprites that were produced in 1971 were no longer called Austin Healey Sprites because the company decided to terminate its relationship with Donald Healey. Thus, they were known as Austin Sprites. It should be noted that because the Austin Healey Sprite cars were manufactured at the factory of MG, MG created its own model that was called the Midget. The versions of the Midget sports car have only minor differences from the Sprites. |
